Ric first entered the automotive industry before he could legally buy a drink. His first job was at the Town and Country Chrysler/Plymouth dealership in Phoenix working as a car washer. From there he spent a year working in the paint and body shops learning the trades. After gaining that invaluable experience, he was moved into the dealership’s office to learn the business side of the industry.
Ric smartly spent time at Arizona State University and Phoenix College to learn accounting, before going back and working for several dealerships and auto shops in Phoenix. But he hated one thing about the big dealerships and body shops; how they were focused on speed instead of quality and profits over people.
With that in mind Ric borrowed money from everywhere he could, including a second mortgage, and cashed in all of his savings to open that first shop near the corner of Cave Creek road and 8th Street in September 1976. Ric knew that he wanted to be different than the big dealerships and auto shops in town. Instead of focusing on volume and income, Ric wanted his shop to be known for quality, trust, integrity and cleanliness.
He put everything on the line, and his employees put all of their trust in him to succeed.
The first few months were touch-and-go, but top-quality service and friendly smiles proved to be a winning combination. In less than a year, Ric’s was a community staple, getting referrals from insurance adjusters, tow truck drivers, police officers and even other auto body shops. His work, his commitment to quality and the faith of his employees paid off.
Ric’s dedication to quality work lead him to be one of the founders of I-CAR in Arizona, the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair. Ric, along with others, created the non-profit organization dedicated to providing the information, knowledge and skills required to perform complete, safe and quality repairs.
Ric’s made the move to Scottsdale in 1988 and moved the business down the street in 1997 to its current location. Despite moving cities, Ric’s values haven’t changed:
- Every customer is treated like Ric would want his own car treated
- He stands behind every job done, even if there is a problem years later
- He refuses to cut corners on repairs
- He makes sure every customer is properly greeted the second the walk in the door
It’s that commitment to quality and customer service that has kept Ric’s a valley staple for nearly 40 years, making getting back on the road as painless as possible.
